Can I sell a car without an MOT?

Yes, you can sell a car with no current MOT. The important distinction is between selling it and driving it: an expired certificate changes how the car can be moved, while a dangerous defect can stop it being driven even if an earlier MOT has not yet expired.

Expired MOT and failed MOT are not the same thing

If the MOT has simply expired, GOV.UK says the car cannot be driven or parked on a public road. The narrow driving exceptions include travelling to a pre-arranged MOT test or to repairs, and the vehicle must still be roadworthy.

If it has failed, read the failure sheet. A car recorded with a dangerous problem must not be driven until that problem is fixed. Do not assume a remaining date on the old certificate overrides the defect.

How to sell it safely

1. Check the official MOT history. Give the buyer the expiry date, the latest result and every advisory or failure item.
2. Describe why it is off the road. An expired test on a sound, regularly used car is different from a non-runner or a car with structural corrosion.
3. Do not arrange an ordinary test drive. If the car cannot legally or safely be driven, it needs static inspection and transporter collection.
4. Agree movement before handover. Confirm who books and pays for transport, and where the transporter can load.
5. Complete the normal keeper change. The MOT position does not remove the seller's duty to notify DVLA.

Should you put it through an MOT first?

For a private sale, a fresh pass can widen the buyer pool and make the car easier to price. It may be worth testing first when you reasonably expect a pass and the car can be taken to the test legally.

It may be better to sell as it stands when the repair bill is uncertain, the car is not roadworthy, or you simply do not want to manage recovery, diagnosis and repairs. Be transparent: hiding a known failure will only create trouble at inspection.

How no MOT affects the valuation

There is no automatic deduction that fits every car. A buyer has to allow for transport, the known repair items and the risk of faults that an MOT would have exposed. Clear photos of the dashboard, tyres, bodywork and any damaged area help replace uncertainty with evidence.
