Can I sell a car without a V5C log book?

Yes, a vehicle can be sold without the physical V5C, but it makes the handover slower and gives the buyer more work. If time allows, replacing a lost or damaged log book before the sale is normally the cleanest option.

What the V5C is used for when you sell

The V5C records the vehicle's registered keeper and contains the reference needed to notify DVLA online. In a normal UK sale, you tell DVLA who has bought the car and give the buyer the green new-keeper slip so they can tax it.

Keep the document reference private while advertising. GOV.UK specifically warns sellers not to publish photographs or copies of the log book because the number can be misused.

If the V5C is missing

You cannot use DVLA's online sold-vehicle service without the log book. GOV.UK says a seller who transfers a vehicle without one must write to DVLA with:

• the seller's name and address;
• the registration number, make and model;
• the exact date of sale; and
• the full name and address of the new keeper or motor trader.

The buyer may also have to apply for their own registration certificate using form V62. That extra delay is why many private buyers and dealers are cautious about a car with no log book.

The simplest route: replace it before the sale

Apply for a replacement V5C through the official GOV.UK service as soon as you realise it is missing. Make sure the name and address on the replacement are current. Once it arrives, the change of keeper can usually be recorded online and both sides have a clear DVLA confirmation.
